History of the Good Shepherd Church
It began as a Mission Room set up in a large house in Stanely Road with a Lay Reader.
In 1890 a small iron church was built in Stanley Road which was replaced in 1900 by a larger iron building in Stanley Park Road.
Later it was proposed that the Ecclesiastical District for Carshalton on the Hill and Upper Wallington should become a separate parish. A site was available and there was £250 in hand for a new church. After the first World War the proposed site was changed and an area in Queen Mary's Avenue was purchased in March 1928. A new permanent church was built there in 1929/30 and consecrated by Dr. Garbett (third Bishop of Southwark) on 8th May 1930. However, the actual formation of a new parish was delayed until November 1965.
